Rhodar have completed the demolition of 3 high rise tower blocks in Calderdale on time and on budget.
Together Housing Group utilised the EN:Procure Asbestos and Demolition Framework for the demolition of the blocks in Halifax, which had stood empty for over 10 years and which were subject to significant levels of trespass and vandalism.
Following a mini-competition process, Rhodar were appointed as the demolition contractor for the works. Specialist asbestos consultants on the project, Testing Lab, were procured through the EN:Procure Asbestos & Demolition Framework and employer’s agent and principal designer SDA procured through the consultants framework.
The blocks were demolished mechanically using one of the UK’s largest excavators, a 54m super high reach excavator, between June 2018 and August 2019.
The scheme, which had a contract value exceeding £6.4m, had various complexities, including extensive asbestos removal works and challenging coordination requirements with various stakeholders. In spite of these challenges, it was completed to time and to budget.
As part of the contract, Rhodar also committed to delivering the equivalent of 6 Apprenticeships (or equivalent).
150,000 tonnes of brick rubble, 700 tonnes of metal waste, 210 tonnes of general waste and 140 tonnes of hard core were recycled and over 100 operatives were on site during key peak work periods.
The project has cleared the way for hundreds of new affordable homes to be built over the next five years, which are due to be delivered through the EN:Procure New Build framework.
Emma Mottram, EN:Procure Head of Operations, commented, “It’s been great to work together with contractors and consultants procured through our frameworks for Together Housing to see this project completed 100% on time and to budget and to see these works carried out so smoothly and successfully. We look forward to supporting Together Housing in any further development of this land to provide more affordable homes for Calderdale."
Andy Fisk, Director of Rhodar’s Demolition Division, commented, “This has been a prestigious and high-profile project and our teams have been thrilled to be a part of a scheme of such importance in the region. Our expertise in both asbestos removal and demolition have allowed us to provide the complete package to enable developments such as this and it is a pleasure to have been able to deliver the first phase successfully alongside partners of the scheme.”
